Between 1801 and 1841 the area of Edgbaston, Birmingham had increased in population from around 1,000 to 16,500, due to a rapid influx of wealthy manufacturers. By 1850, 29 roads had been laid out and uninterrupted growth continued. As of 2001, it had a population of 20,749.
